Weatherwall

 

Aspendale, Victoria (38° 01' 41" South, 145° 01' 48" East)

The Weatherwall requires a full implementation of the Java libraries. We recommend that you view the Weatherwall with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4+ or Netscape Navigator 4.5+. It will not run on earlier versions or other browsers that do not implement the full suite of Java routines. You can obtain the Java Runtime libraries from the Sun Microsystems website.

The updated version now is now linked to a database. It has the ability to display weather data from July 2000 until today.
Please note that this data is not official but is meant as a guide only to indicate what the weather at Aspendale was at the requested date.
At present this version is having trouble communicating with Macintosh computers.

The CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research electronic Weatherwall was developed by the Division's Information Technology Group in 1997. It was a prototype system, demonstrating the ability to integrate the technologies of real-time data acquisition, networked data management and graphical user interface/Java programming on a Web server.

Instructions

Weather chartWeather charts are time stamped. The left chart (in the Weatherwall ) shows the latest weather pattern. The right chart displays patterns over the past 24 hours.
The animation can be started or stopped by clicking in the chart window. Images are not automatically updated. To display a new charts, the page needs to be reloaded.Satellite images are courtesy of James Cook University.

 

 

Radar chart Precipitation radar maps display the current activity occurring over the bay and the surrounding area. They are updated every ten minutes. An animation can started/stopped by left clicking on the radar map. Heavier falls are shaded in yellow and red. Images are not automatically updated To display a new charts, the page needs to be reloaded.These images are courtesy of the Bureau of Meteorology Bureau of Meteorology.

 

 

Wind speed and directionThe dials panel shows the time, wind speed, wind direction (text & degrees), pressure, temperature and wind chill temperature. The wind speed dial displays two lines representing the maximum and minimum speeds over the last 24 hours. The text values of these are also displayed. The temperature and wind chill thermometers display the current temperature in red, the maximum temperature in yellow and the minimum temperature in blue. The current text reading is displayed on the left of the 'thermometers'.

 

Temperature graphThe graph displays temperature in red, pressure in yellow and the wind chill in blue. The red arrows display the wind vectors on the hour for the previous period. Any of the graphs can be displayed or removed by checking or unchecking the appropriate control box.
The x axis displays the time in hourly intervals measured back from the time the page was activated. The graph is updated Every five minutes.

 

Map of Port Phillip BayThe map of Port Phillip Bay is digitised and shows a vector of the prevailing winds at Aspendale.
The length of the arrow is proportional to wind speed. Current time and day and date are displayed. The data are updated every 30 seconds from our Web server.
The data in yellow at Melbourne, Pt.Wilson, & Sth Island Channel is supplied by the courtesy of the Bureau of Meteorology and comes direct from their automatic weather stationsvia their web site

 

 

 

Weatherwall control boxThe weather wall control box includes options to manipulate the data. With 'Weatherwall online' selected, the browser will query the server every 30 seconds for the latest weather data. This is default mode upon activation.

'Automatic History' suspends online operation and begins animating the weather conditions from the previous 24 hours of downloaded data. (The history is in multiples of 5 minutes which requires some 288 records to be downloaded, hence the extended time to download the appplet.)
'Pause' - pauses(stops) the automatic history animation
'Resume' - starts the animation
'Forward/Backward' set the animation going Backwards in time, or Forwards in time
'Reset' - Resets the history to start from the current time.
'Interactive Control' is enabled by clicking in the 'Interactive History' Radio button. When enabled, you can use the slider bar to proceed to any period. When in history mode, no new data are being downloaded from the server
Click 'Weather Wall Online' to reset the history and download the latest data from the server.
